MELAKA, Sept 9 (Bernama) -- ASEAN must harness generative artificial intelligence (AI) and strengthen data sharing to combat transnational crime, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He emphasized that global disruptions and new technologies are redefining security, as criminals increasingly use digital platforms, cryptocurrencies and AI to expand their cross-border activities.

"We all know that the generative AI technology is a game-changer for achieving some of the goals I just mentioned. But this technology is only helpful if we have the right and sufficient data."

"That is why data sharing is a must if we want to work together to stop cross-border crimes," he said in his welcoming remarks at the 19th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC) and its related meetings.

Saifuddin Nasution outlined four priorities for ASEAN to focus on: stepping up action against people smuggling and human trafficking, establishing a Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC) Working Group on Money Laundering, finalising the SOMTC Work Programme 2026-2028, and shaping the ASEAN Plan of Action to Combat Transnational Crime 2026-2035.

He also urged ASEAN to match unity with courage, by facing new threats, updating outdated systems and making bold decisions to protect the dignity and safety of its 680 million citizens.

Melaka has become the regional focal point this week as ASEAN ministers and senior officials in security and law enforcement convene from Sept 8 to 12 for the 19th AMMTC and Related Meetings to strengthen regional cooperation and address threats posed by transnational crime.

The meetings are held in conjunction with Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship 2025 under the theme "Inclusivity and Sustainability", reflecting the country's commitment to building a safer and more prosperous ASEAN community.
